Home Health Safety Survey

Many people fall and injure themselves in domestic accidents each year (month). House fires where smoke alarms are not installed or are inactive result in unnecessary deaths. Faulty power points, frayed cords and overloaded circuits lead to blackouts (and electrocution at worst). Blocked gutters, overgrown paths and lawns and slippery / uneven paths decrease home values and increase the risk of falls and other injuries.

There is rarely a situation where the home environment becomes unsafe overnight. Typically, risk factors grow because they are not recognised or because repair or replacement is put off until ‘later’. Changes in health and physical capacity mean that light bulbs, doors and windows that stick and garden maintenance can just ‘get away’ from people.

Focus Healthcare Home Health and Safety checks involve a careful and thorough assessment of both the client and the environment they live in. The assessor (an Occupational Therapist or Registered Nurse) is tasked with identifying all hazards which put the client at risk of poor health or injury. Priority is given to suggesting improvements / modifications to the home environment which will help clients maintain their independence and enjoy a safe, healthy and satisfying quality of life.

The alternative to an in-home health and safety assessment is RDNS’ Healthy Homes Booklet. This booklet contains a Home Health and Safety Check List. The check list identifies a comprehensive list of potential hazards: inside and outside the home. You decide – from the prompts – what risks exist. The booklet then refers you qualified businesses and tradespeople who can help with maintenance, repairs or the installation of safety equipment such as rails, bathroom heating, non-slip floors, toilet raisers and rails for showers, baths and toilets.
