Basic Meal Preparation

Meals on Wheels is an invaluable community service, but not everybody finds it suitable to their needs. For short periods – after hospitalisation or serious illness – or for particular meals (weekends or evenings) some people appreciate having a simple meal prepared for them – at home.
Basic meal preparation may be as simple as a sandwich, made in advance and available in the fridge to be eaten when convenient. It may be hot soup or a chop and some vegetables, or in summer, a salad.

Regular meals are important for the maintenance of a satisfactory and nourishing diet.

At Focus Healthcare, help with meal preparation is based on a careful assessment of client (and carer) needs, including assessment of the dietary preferences and needs of each client. Priority is given to identifying and planning for attractive, tasty meals. Special attention is given to ensure that the client receives adequate nutrition.

Shopping for food staples is included in this service.

How to receive help with basic meal preparation from Focus Healthcare

Any person needing help with basic meal preparation can receive it from Focus Healthcare. All that is required is a telephone call to 1300 363 262 (24 hours / day). Our contact centre personnel will process the referral promptly and can advise you of charges and options for payment and any rebates (e.g. as part of hospital discharge planning or from the Department of Veterans Affairs (War Veterans).
Once a referral is received our Home Services Coordinator will assign a Home Support Worker to assist with planning when help with meals is required. The coordinator is responsible for supervision of the care you received from Focus Healthcare and for communication with other people who may be involved e.g. a nurse, your GP and other members of your family.

Charges

Focus’ Home Support Coordinator will prepare a personal quote for a Home Support Worker to attend, prepare and serve a simple meal (ingredients supplied by client). (Health fund, DVA and other rebates may apply).
